SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — CALIFORNIA58 LOCAL. South San Francisco has set a public participation goal of 1,000 adopted storm drains by December 31, 2026. In its October 8 announcement, officials said only 325 of the city’s more than 2,700 storm drains had been adopted.
Local reporting and context
The initiative invites residents, businesses, schools and community groups to select a drain and clear leaves or litter from the surface where it is safe to do so. The work supplements, rather than replaces, municipal drainage maintenance.
Removing debris at the entrance to a drain may help stormwater move off streets and reduce some local flooding risks. It does not guarantee streets will remain dry during intense rainfall or resolve pipe-capacity issues.
The city specifically tells volunteers not to enter traffic, remove grates or work on drains during a storm. Interested neighbors can register through the city’s Adopt a Storm Drain portal and follow its safety instructions.
